Quality and diversity a short distance away from Faro airport.
“Southern Portugal has some of the most exciting and easy birdwatching in Europe. So many good birds, accessible because the diversity of habitats within a short drive is impressive, plus everything else that makes Portugal a perfect travel destination!

HIGHLIGHTS

Southern Portugal has an extremely rich avifauna, partly due to a very diverse landscape in a small scale. Over 400 different species have been recorded within the region.

WHAT I OFFER
Full-day or Half-day tours
I can guide individuals and groups on private tours tailored according to your indications of what are your target birds or your favourite type of habitats, although there are hotspots I recommend in the region: the wetlands of Ria Formosa and Castro Marim in the Eastern Algarve, the plains of Castro Verde and Vale do Guadiana in Southern Alentejo and the coastal cliffs of Sagres in the Western Algarve.
I speak fluent english, spanish and portuguese.
Birders should bring their own binoculars but I have a Leica Trinovid 32x scope for shared use.
Identification books can be arranged upon request.
HOW MUCH IT COSTS
The price depends of how many people are involved, of how far is the pickup from Faro and of what is the destination of the day tour.
As a reference, the price for a full day for a single person based in central or eastern Algarve doing a day-tour in that same area is --- euros.
Food and beverage is not included.

YOUR GUIDE
My name is João T. Tavares (but you can call me J.T.).
I am a biologist and an illustrator. I fell in love with birds in 1996, studying Biology in Évora. Since then, I studied the ecology of such charismatic species as Rufous Bush Chats, Spectacled Warblers, Little Bustards and Bonelli's eagles in Southern Portugal. I also participated in seabird surveys in the Portuguese EEZ and several raptor monitoring programs. In the Algarve, I have been a regional volunteer coordinator for the latest national atlas programs and since 2015 I have been one of the local reviewers for eBird.
I really enjoyed my first experience showing birds to a group from the Nova Scotia Bird Society in 2002, and since then I have been sharing my local knowledge with visiting birders.
In 2014, after 8 years living in the Algarve, I started working as a freelancing birdwatching guide and I have guided tours for several companies, local and foreign.
